Malden adopts MBTA Communities Zoning

SOLUTIONS

CommunityScale worked with the City of Malden to craft compliant zoning for the Massachusetts MBTA Communities requirement, and the City Council adopted it on December 12, 2023. The Planning Board had recommended the zoning unanimously the week before, and every community member who spoke at both public meetings voiced support. The new zoning establishes an overlay with a series of subdistricts that concentrate multifamily capacity and mixed-use development around Malden’s two station areas, giving the city a transit-oriented framework that meets state requirements while reflecting local priorities. Malden was one of twelve rapid-transit communities required to comply by the end of 2023.
